It can be disconcerting to think that an evil spirit might be following you wanting to harm you, however, if you’re a Christian and are filled with the Holy Spirit, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
When Jesus Christ rose from the dead he conquered both sin and death and took away Satan’s powers.
O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
If you are filled with the Holy Spirit, understand that light and darkness can not coexist. Once you are filled with the Holy Spirit, demons have no power to harm you. The only thing they have remaining is the ability to place temptations in front of you. It’s then your job to rely heavily on the Holy Spirit to give you strength to avoid these temptations.
So lets assume that a demon is following you….So what….It can’t do anything to you. It can not harass you or cause you harm. And not only that, but the Holy Spirit has absolute power over all the demons including Satan. By being filled with the Holy Spirit we can command any demon through the name of Jesus Christ and that demon must obey Jesus.
As an example, a few years ago we were having a Bible study and there was a child who had come to the meeting with his parents. This child was perhaps 6 or 7 years old. All of a sudden he started crying and pointing at an empty chair in the corner of the room. His parents asked him what was wrong and he said there was a scary man sitting in that chair. We looked and saw nothing but the boy insisted there was a scary man sitting there. Well our Bible study leader realized immediately that a demon had entered the house and the child could see it, sitting in the chair. Our Bible study leader casually, and without even getting up from his own chair, looked toward that corner of the room and calmly said, “Demon, in the name of Jesus, leave this house and don’t come back.” And just like that the boy stopped crying and said the scary man was gone. The Bible study leader then said a prayer for the house that no other demons would come in.
So you see, demons have no power at all over those who have the Holy Spirit. If, however, you don’t yet have the Holy Spirit, you might be subjected to the full array of demonic powers. That’s why it’s very important that you pray to Jesus that he give you His Holy Spirit. Ask for it and you will receive it. From that time on, demons will have no power over you except that of placing temptations in front of you.
Once you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you should focus your mind on what’s good rather than on what’s evil. Stop worrying about Demons following you. Instead focus on Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)
