Most people consider themselves to be a good person and that by being a good person they’ll go to heaven. But here’s a simple question: If good people go to heaven, for what reason did Jesus die on the cross? If salvation and eternal life require only that a person be good, it means Jesus died for no reason.
But what if I told you you’re not a good person? What if I told you no one is a good person and only bad people go to heaven?
Consider this: you may in fact, at this point in your life, be a relatively nice, kind, friendly, caring and thoughtful person. But have you always been that way? Have you ever been jealous of someone? Have you ever hated someone? Have you ever stolen something? Have you ever lied? Have you ever made a big mistake and either tried to cover it up or blame someone else for it?
Well guess what? You’re not a good person. You’re a bad person. But here’s the good news…. Jesus died on the cross so that you can be forgiven.
Anyone who says they’re a good person always compares themselves to someone who’s worse. Instead they should compare themselves to Jesus Christ.
Every Christ follower has had to come to a point of recognizing that they are inherently a bad person, who occasionally does good things. They have to recognize that by turning to Christ they can be forgiven of all their previous wrongs and can find new life in a relationship with Jesus.
What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. As it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;
there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.”
“Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit.”
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”
“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
ruin and misery mark their ways,
and the way of peace they do not know.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Consider the person who believes himself or herself to be a good person; the Bible says that among the seven things God hates, one of them is pride. Satan got himself kicked out of heaven because of pride. Anyone who believes themselves to be a good person, is someone who is prideful. I mean really….With all the terrible things each of us have done during our lives, to think for a moment that we’re a good person is really conceited and prideful; the very thing God hates.
Thus the title of this post, “Good People Go To Hell…” What it really means is that prideful people go to hell. Anyone who believes they don’t need God is a prideful, conceited person who thinks so highly of themselves they consider themselves above God by stating they have no need for Him. It is these people who will go to hell.
Those that recognize they are bad and need God to forgive them, it is they who go to heaven.
